There are some things I would never dream of doing:
Go to a different part of town without pulling up a map on my phone.
I never say, "I'll just figure out how to get to this place using my own sense of direction."Try a new recipe without using the recipe.
I never say, "I don't need this comprehensive list of instructions to figure out the ingredients I need or how long to cook the dish."Take a trip without doing any research.
I never say, "I don't care what I do, how much I spend on airfare, where I stay, or what I eat on this trip."Installing a new garbage disposal without looking at least three YouTube videos.
I never say, "I’ll figure out this thing I've never done before that involves water and sharp blades all on my own."Meet with someone without checking out their website or LinkedIn.
I never say, "Professionalism and personality don't matter to me...bring on the unknown!"
Working with a new client and not following the order of marketing operations.
I never say, "Oh, we can just skip over a few of the steps...the laws of marketing don't apply here." P.S. The laws of marketing apply to every business. Every. Single. One.
So why is it that I see so many entrepreneurs try to figure out their branding and marketing all on their own? Or winging it without a plan that factors in where they are now and where they want to go? Or listen to well-meaning advice from people who are unqualified to give legit branding or marketing advice?
If you’re winging your marketing, give yourself the gift of a plan. Consider it your GPS, the recipe, the itinerary, the guide, and the clarity-creator for your business. Because when you know where you’re going, it’s so much easier to get there.
