What marketing mistakes am I making that I don't know I'm making?
That brilliant question came from my community a few weeks ago and really really really got me thinking...probably because I have an answer. I have a framework that I use with my clients that helps us hone in on any blindspots and get back on track. It's like the skies part, the sun comes out, and the path suddenly becomes clear.
Because marketing is not rocket science. Swear!
I took the exact framework I use at my agency and am sharing it for the first time with entrepreneurs like you who are serious about success in a FREE masterclass: Better Start Branding on March 4 & 6. Get the details here:
Hey everybody, this is Heather Campbell with a little Pro Marketing Advice because you know, when you know what the pros do, you, my friend can do what the pros do. And I'm going to share with you one of the most brilliant questions I've heard in a while. I sent a message out to my community saying, What are your burning marketing questions?
And someone sent a message back, and I don't know who it is, but I'm forever grateful for them. Because they said, "Heather, what marketing mistakes am I making that I don't know that I'm making?" And I'm like, Oh man! That is such a good question. Because a lot of times, especially in the entrepreneurial community, we get this idea and the message is like, We gotta go, go, go, go, go so fast.
And what I see a lot is about 90% of people who are overwhelmed, who end up getting overwhelmed by marketing have just marketing out of sequence. If you follow me at all, you know that I say about a bazillion times that marketing is not rocket science, but there is a definite process and sequence to it.
And when you get it right, that makes your marketing path so smooth and when you get it wrong, it's the recipe for marketing mayhem. And we don't want mayhem for anybody, because it doesn't have to be that way because marketing is not rocket science. But if you're marketing out of sequence, then yeah, definitely you could be feeling some of that overwhelm. One of the things that I see a lot of times, and this is what it looks like, this is how it shows up in your business. You're like, "I have this idea" You immediately start working on your website or your social media and you might be skipping over some core components, like understanding your brand value in the competitive environment.
Who do you want to serve and who are your most valuable customers? And creating a product and pricing lineup that aligns with what you do better than anyone else and what your customers want, right? Each one of those is designed to build on the next. And the thing is, when it comes to marketing, you can't start at the end if you want any hope of success.
But it also doesn't take a long time either. You just want to make sure that you have the intention. I always say, where do you want to start? Start at the beginning sight, right? Meaning you know exactly where you want to go. Just spend a little bit of time understanding your brand value...
a little bit of time, but maybe a fair amount, like a decent amount of time, really understanding your customers and then really figuring out your product and pricing lineup, and then you're ready to start doing your website and identity and marketing and all that kind of good stuff that comes. Because one of the things is, even though I say start at the beginning with the end in sight, when it comes to marketing, I don't even think there's never an end.
It's just something that's enduring. One of the things that this question inspired in me, this question again is "What marketing mistakes am I making that I don't know that I'm making?" Inspired me because I have this framework that I use at my own agency when I work with clients because I need to meet with people.
A lot of times I'm auditing their brand and their marketing program, and I need to be able to present it in a way that they understand my thought process and how the process and sequence of marketing works. They may be pretty savvy marketers, but that's not what they do from day to day.
That question inspired me to take that framework that I use at my agency and it literally is one of those things that when we share it, it just levels the playing field and the sky's open and the sun shines down and you're able to see your blind spots and then know where you're got off track and really easily get back on track.
I call and I'm taking the same framework and I'm DIYing it for Savvy and Scrappy Entrepreneurs, and doing a masterclass next week. Next Thursday at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, 9:00 AM Mountain Time and also, I'm doing trying a Saturday morning just to see how that works. Also, at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, 9:00 AM Mountain Time, I call it the Better Start Branding Masterclass.
And I'm going to again, be sharing the same exact framework that I used with my clients. When I talk about the exact process and sequence, that's exactly what I'm going to be sharing in this webinar. And it's really designed to help everyone understand, just especially entrepreneurs in the very, very beginning stages of bit, building their business, really under getting those core components in place, the right foundation.
It's like I work with a lot of real estate developers and we know if you have the right foundation, you can build the Taj Mahal on top of it, but you need to have a firm foundation, and that's where you start at the beginning, but with the end in mind.
I call it Better Start Branding because not only when you start with your brand, does it give you a better start. It's one of those things that there's a lot, you guys better start branding because I just read this crazy stat that there are a million more people like there was a 30% increase and the number of people who started businesses last year, a hundred percent related to covid. If you've been hearing like, "Oh, it's going to get a little more competitive out there!" This is exactly why you want to make sure you really have this foundation.
Lockdown and ready to go. You start right from the start. Check it out. The link is, I never know where the link is. Is it this way? This way down above me. I'm not quite sure, but the link to the webinar is there. You can check it out my friend. Oh! Eileen McManis is on the call. She's like, "Did I sign up yet?" I don't know. I'll have to check Eileen, but the link is right in my comments, so please do check it out. If you can't make the fourth or the sixth, definitely register anyway so you can get the replay. And I am just so excited to share it with you. I'm so thankful to the person who asked that question. You're still anonymous to me, so if you want to let me know, reveal yourself to me, that would be so awesome because I just want to thank you personally for inspiring something that I think is going to help a lot of fellow entrepreneurs.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You guys, I'm super excited for my masterclass next week. Again, sign up in the link and please know in the meantime that wherever you are in this beautiful, crazy, ever-changing world of ours, that there's someone right here in like super snowy. We got 22 inches of snow last night, Colorado, who is 100 a thousand percent rooting for you.
